Ombudsmen of Ukraine and Lithuania discussed the problems of Ukrainian political prisoners

36556853 1983689945224925 6158726576952311808 nDuring a meeting with the Seimas Ombudsmen Augustinas Normantas and Raimondas Šukys, Ludmila Denisova, the Ukraine Commissioner for Human Rights, discussed the issue of developing a mechanism for involving European ombudsmen in finding a solution of the liberation of Ukrainian political prisoners in Russia.

The ombudsman of Ukraine drew the attention of Lithuanian counterparts that she appealed to EU ambassadors at the EU-Ukraine summit recently to adopt a resolution on Ukrainian political prisoners. Furthermore, L. Denisova addressed the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunya Mijatovich with a proposal for the possibility of conducting a joint visit to Ukrainian political prisoner, a film director Oleg Sentsov, and other Ukrainian political prisoners detained in Russia.

For their part, A.Normantas and R. Šukys supported L. Denisova by remarking that they were ready to cooperate in negotiating with European ombudsmen for the possible solutions to resolve the impasse related to Ukrainian political prisoners.

"This issue needs to be discussed at the board of the European Ombudsman Institute (EOI), a member of which, among others, is the Ombudswoman of Russian Federation," said A. Normantas, a member of the Board of the EOI.
