Signing ceremony of the cooperation agreement was held in the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office

Pasirašymo sutartisOn 18 November 2014 the head of the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office Augustinas Normantas signed a cooperation agreement with the head of the Law Institute of Lithuania Jurgita Paužaitė-Kulvinskienė. The Seimas Ombudsmen’s office and the Institute will collaborate in the field of research, counselling, development of projects and organising of conferences.

“Respect for human rights, constitutional values and justice, which ensures balance between the rights and duties in social relations prevailing in the society is what we aim for when protecting human rights,” said the head of the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office Augustinas Normantas during the signing ceremony.

In the opinion of the Seimas Ombudsman A. Normantas, experience of the Law Institute of Lithuania in incorporation of advantages of the European Law development into the Lithuanian law and legal system will contribute to the achievement of a strategic goal of the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office’s to become a national human rights institution.

Moreover, it will have a positive impact on performance of national prevention of torture under the Optional Protocol (OPCAT) to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.

“I believe that partnership between the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office and the Law Institute of Lithuania, the main goal of which is to cooperate in legal and social spheres, will help to bridge the gap between science and practice, will create more possibilities for awareness-raising in the field of human rights and freedoms,” noted the Seimas Ombudsman.
