The Seimas Ombudsmen's Office and ENNHRI held a seminar on human rights based care

KupiskisThe Seimas Ombudsmen's Office in cooperation with ENNHRI expert Dr Ciara O'Dwyer commenced a seminar on human rights based care "Human rights-based care of elderly" in Kupiškis Centre for Social Services.

The social workers from different institutions within Panevėžys region came to advance their knowledge of human rights based care at the seminar. Mr Dainius Bardauskas, the Mayor of Kupiškis District Municipality, addressed the audience by emphasizing the importance and timeliness of the training.

A workshop aimed to introduce the core findings of the European overview report to the social workers of social care institutions which have been monitored by a monitoring team of the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office and provide an overall picture of how human rights legislation is taken into account when planning and delivering services.

The Seimas Ombudsman has met with the Australian Human Rights Commissioner

Australija1The Seimas Ombudsman Raimondas Šukys has met with the Australian Human Rights Commissioner Edward Santow and discussed the different human rights challenges our countries are facing and exchanged experience in dealing them. The Commissioner introduced the Australian Human Rights Commission and took a keen interest in the activity of the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office.

As a collegial body, the Australian Human Rights Commission consists of eight commissioners. The Commission is headed by the oldest member who is Professor Gillian Triggs. The Commission is accountable to the Australian Parliament through the Attorney General.

As a Commissioner Mr. Santow was appointed to for a five-year period in 2016, before that he headed a non-governmental organisation, taught at university.

The Commissioner visited Lithuania at the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania. The intention of the visit was to introduce the Australian Human Rights Commission and ask for the Lithuanian's support for Australia when the country will be in the running for a seat on the UN Human Rights Council.

Students from different European countries have discussed human rights at the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office

17349717 1762631020664153 2489790814558367297 oStudents from various countries focused on human rights principles and international commitments at the discussion, which was organised by the Seimas Ombudsman's Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania.

By welcoming students from eight European Countries, the head of the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office, Mr. Augustinas Normantas, noted that human rights are not only the rule of law but also encompass the culture of societies, the politics of states, and the attitudes of people.

Students from Greece, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Lithuania, France, Portugal, and Romania shared their thoughts on the human rights principles enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights, and they discussed respect for diversity, equality, and equal rights.

Professor of International Law at Mykolas Romeris University, Mr. Justas Žilinskas, started the event by asking students why it was important to respect human rights. He was interested in how human rights were defended and promoted in their countries. He talked about the development of human rights and human rights protection mechanisms in the world.
