The Seimas Ombudsman: "The centre of the discussion on the ratification of the Convention must remain the protection of women from violence.”

 MG 8209Attending the international conference addressing the issue “The ratification of [the] Istanbul Convention – what would change?”, Mr Augustinas Normantas, the head of the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office, expressed the hope that the protection of women from violence would remain the focus of the discussion.

Mr Normantas expressed his belief that domestic violence has been and continues to be one of the critical problems in the country: "By adopting the Law on Domestic Violence, we recognised the existence of the problem, but it is necessary to continue work and discuss how efficiently [the law can] protect women from violence and [help] victims of domestic violence."

The Seimas Ombudsman recalled that during his visit to Lithuania, Nils Muižnieks, the Commissioner for Human Rights with the Council of Europe, urged Lithuania to ratify the Istanbul Convention, which was signed by Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičiaus in 2013, noting that it is a tool to fight against both domestic violence and violence against women.

The Seimas Ombudsman welcomed the participants of the programme "Volunteering in the field of human rights."

IMG 0117Augustinas Normantas, Head of the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office, handed certificates to the students who have successfully completed the programme "Volunteering in the field of human rights" carried out by the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office.

A. Normantas expressed his hope that knowledge and experience acquired during participation in the programme will be useful not only in studies but also in life: "We need to remember that respect for human rights is one of the essential values of a democratic society; therefore, skills and competences acquired during the training will benefit in the future."

An educational programme was designed to develop young lawyers’ perception of the application of human rights standards in the penal system.  Applying practical and theoretical approach, the coordinators of the programme aimed to educate future lawyers by raising their awareness on human rights as well as broadening their knowledge about the United Nations and other human rights mechanisms.

The Seimas Ombudsmen‘s Office became an accredited National Human Rights Institution (NHRI)

35089085822 a3d18598d3 oViktoras Pranckietis, the Speaker of the Seimas (Parliament), in his opening address at the event organised by the Seimas Ombudsmen congratulated the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office with accreditation as a National Human Rights Institution (NHRI).

According to the Speaker of the Seimas, an accredited national human rights institution makes a significant part of the national and international legal system as it observes how the State implements international obligations in the sphere of human rights and participates in the activities of the United Nations and relevant regional human rights organisations.

„A message that the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office has become an accredited National Human Rights Institution is a result of continuous work, and I congratulate all of you with this result. It is important to understand that an NHRI serves as a bridge between national and international human rights instruments as well as between the civil society and the State. Therefore, accreditation of the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office as an A status national human rights institution is a big accomplishment both for the State and its citizens“, noted the Speaker of the Seimas.
