The Seimas Ombudsman Raimondas Šukys urges to safeguard professional rights of journalists

Raimondas ŠukysThe Seimas Ombudsman Raimondas Šukys addressed the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania with a recommendation to draft a sample regulation, which would assure that the right of journalists’ to get/acquire information is properly implemented by governmental and municipal institutions.

In the opinion of R. Šukys, bureaucratic obstacles such as different regulations that hinder journalists from implementing their professional duties, i.e. to get information promptly and disseminate it by informing the society, cannot be tolerated.

The UN expert counselled the employees of the Human Rights Division of the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office

 MG 0707On 3 July 2014 the UN expert of the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SPT) Ms. Mari Amos visited the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office and provided consultation to employees of the Human Rights Division of the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office on monitoring of detention places in Lithuania.

On the day of the visit, the expert met with the Seimas Ombudsman Augustinas Normantas and discussed the implementation of the National Program on Prevention of Torture in Lithuania.

In addition, the guest shared her experience of performing monitoring of detention places and provided the employees with recommendations for improvement of the procedure of the monitoring of detention places.

The Seimas Ombudsman encourages respecting human rights in Foreigners Registration Center

URCThe respect for the human being and his/her rights should not depend on his / her nationality or origin”- this view was shared by the Seimas Ombudsman Augustinas Normantas on the World Refugee Day drawing attention to the acute problems in Foreigners Registration Center.

After the visit to the Foreigners Registration Center, the Seimas Ombudsman came to a conclusion that there were no separate premises ensured both for the refugees and detained immigrants.

Also the Seimas Ombudsman identified poor implementation of requirements for living premises and hygiene norms: “There are less than five square meters for each person in the Centre; the premises are not heated enough. The natural and artificial light does not meet the minimum requirements”.
