The Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office has observed International Human Rights Day

Zmogaus teisiu diena 2015 2International Human Rights Day is a momentous day for the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office because in addition to establishing respect for human rights within the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania, the founders of the Constitution envisaged mechanisms for human rights protection, and among these is the Seimas Ombudsmen’s Office.

"Today we are commemorating International Human Rights Day. Still, this day is important to us as the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office was founded twenty years ago," said the head of the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office, Mr Augustinas Normantas, congratulating the participants gathered for the conference.

Several acknowledged scholars, including Prof. Ph Vytautas Mizaras, Vilnius University; former judge of the Constitutional Court, Prof. Ph Tomas Birmontienė; Prof. Ph Leonidas Donskis, Vytautas Magnus University; present judges of the Constitutional Court, Algirdas Taminskas, and Danutė Jočienė delivered speeches on human rights during the conference.

The Seimas Ombudsmen and the Chairperson of the Seimas Committee for Human Rights have discussed the human rights issues

On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, the Seimas Ombudsmen Augustinas Normantas, Raimondas Šukys, and the Chairperson of the Seimas Committee for Human Rights Zita Žvikienė have visited Šiauliai and Alytus municipalities, where they discussed human rights issues with the mayors and the executive managers of the municipalities of Alytus and Šiauliai regions.

The Seimas Ombudsmen addressed different human rights problems that were brought up to the Seimas Ombudsmen by citizens during their visits to the municipalities.

“It is necessary to discuss human rights problems with the mayors of the municipalities. Also, we wanted to get acquainted with the executives of the municipalities with whom we usually have to tackle the issues related to the bureaucracy,” noted the Seimas Ombudsman R. Šukys.

The project on older people rights was introduced in Seoul during ASEM Conference on global ageing

Seulas ValentinaviciusThe Communications Lead of the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office Mr Vytauras Valentinavičius at the invitation of the National Human Rights Commissioner of Korea on 26-28 October 2015 participated in ASEM Conference on Global Ageing and Human Rights of Older Persons and Long-term Care.

Mr Valentinavičius introduced the project on The Human Rights of Older Persons, and Long-term Care carried out by European Network of National Human Rights Institutions (ENNHRI) in partnership with the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office and other European countries. The goal of the project is to improve the human rights protection of older persons in long-term care, with particular emphasis on residential care.

The participants of the conference included ASEM members, national human rights institutions (NHRIs), representatives from international organisations including the UN, academic experts, and international NGOs have discussed acute problems global ageing and the role of NHRIs in the promotion and protection of the rights of older people.

As a result of global ageing and the growing number of older persons, more attention has to be paid to the needs and rights of the elderly. It was agreed unanimously that national policies need to be comprehensive and coordinated to adequately promote and protect the rights and well-being of older persons. All speakers of the conference confirmed their commitment to the promotion of human rights of the elderly.
