The European officers gathered in Vilnius for international training on prevention of torture

 MG 7203The officers for prevention of torture from 16 European countries converged in Vilnius on 21-23 June 2016 where the training on prevention of torture was held on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT).

The workshop "Monitoring of Psychiatric Facilities" co-organized by the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) and Association for Prevention of Torture (APT) took place in the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office.

Psychiatrists from Great Britain and Austria, working in the sphere of human rights and experts from the Committee against Torture of the United Nations, European Council and Association for Prevention of Torture have taught European officers in Vilnius.

The concerns on how to talk to people with mental disorder, what issues to focus on when visiting psychiatric institutions and what problems with people face when are in psychiatric facilities were the highlight of the training. Moreover, the participants of the training visited the Rokiškis psychiatric hospital on the second day of the workshop.

The Seimas Ombudsmen's Office and the Association of Regional Radio Stations to be collaborating in creating broadcasts on human rights

The Association of Regional Radio Stations received funding from the Press, Radio and Television Support Fund for the project “Respect for democratic values and human rights – mission possible”, which was prepared with the help of the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office.

“The Seimas Ombudsmen's Office has always been looking for new forms of contributing to the human rights promotion countrywide; therefore, radio broadcasts in regional radio stations is one of the ways to increase the knowledge of the society on human rights and freedoms," noted the head of the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office Augustinas Normantas.

A sense of community, civic initiatives and activities that have an impact on the development of democratic values will be in the centre of broadcasts. Moreover, the radio programmes will focus on the corruption and bureaucracy as major factors causing widespread damage to the democratic societies. Also, considerable attention will be paid to the right to get information as well as techniques to fight against propaganda.

Lithuanian and Austrian lawyers and human rights experts will help strengthen institutional capacities of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights

Augustinas Normantas3Lithuania, as a senior partner, together with Austria has won the European Union's Twinning project Implementation of the Best European Practices with the Aim of Strengthening the Institutional Capacity of the Apparatus of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights to Protect Human Rights and Freedoms (Apparatus), which will be implemented by a team of the best Lithuanian and Austrian human rights experts.

Under the leadership of the Seimas Ombudsman Augustinas Normantas the project will be implemented by well-known Lithuanian experts of legal science and practice representing the Law Institute of Lithuania, the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office of the Republic of Lithuania, the Office of Equal Opportunities Ombudsperson, the State Data Protection Inspectorate, and the Law Faculty of Vilnius University. Austria is represented in the Project by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights. Administrative and financial management of this two-year project will be implemented by the Central Project Management Agency. The European Commission is providing EUR 1.5 million to the project.
