A delegation from Armenia visits Seimas Ombudsmen‘s Office

 MG 7540On 20 September 2016, the Seimas Ombudsman, Head of the Office Mr. Augustinas Normantas hosted a meeting with Mr. Arman Tatoyan, Human Rights Defender and Eduard Israyelyan, Head of Child Rights Protection Division of the Republic of Armenia. The meeting focused on the activities of the Seimas Ombudsmen and the Human Rights Defender, human rights problems in Armenia and Lithuania as well as mechanisms that ensure implementation of human rights.

The Human Rights Defender of Armenia was interested in the implementation of Seimas Ombudsmen‘s recommendations and keen to know how the cooperation with state and municipal institutions is maintained. When talking about the activities of the Seimas Ombudsmen‘s Office Mr. A. Normantas drew the guests’ attention to the fact that the Seimas Ombudsmen put emphasis not only to the cooperation with state and municipal institutions but also with the civil society and NGOs.

The European Committee for The Prevention of Torture presented preliminary observations

 MG 7490Upon the invitation of the Seimas Ombudsman Augustinas Normantas, the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) presented its preliminary observations concerning human rights situation in places of detention of the Republic of Lithuania.

The meeting took place at the Seimas Ombudsmen‘s Office and was attended by officials from the Ministries of Justice, Interior and Health, Prison and Police Departments, Prosecutor’s General Office and State Border Guard Service. The Seimas Ombudsman Augustinas Normantas noted to the attendees that when performing national prevention of torture, the Seimas Ombudsmen‘s Office takes into account not only national and international legal acts, but also standards prepared by the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture.

“Respect for human rights is a common value of all democratic states; therefore, I believe that the observations made by the CPT delegation will help to strive for higher human rights standards in places of detention and valuable insights will contribute to a more constructive cooperation when solving different human rights problems”, stated the Seimas Ombudsman.

Activities of the Seimas Ombudsmen have been introduced to representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Lithuania

 MG 7472Presenting the activities of the Seimas Ombudsmen‘s Office to the representatives of the U.S. Embassy in Lithuania, the Head of Seimas Ombudsmen‘s Office Augustinas Normantas provided information on the human rights‘ situation in the country. „I have no doubts that the aim of all democratic states is to foster respect for human rights“, – stated Mr. Normantas. 

At the meeting with the representatives of the U.S. Embassy, Mr. Tedd Janis and Mrs. Giedra Gureviciute-Demereckiene, the Seimas Ombudsman revealed important issues that are the basis of complaints launched to the Ombudsman; moreover, presented human rights problems arising in places of deprivation of liberty.

Speaking about the activities of an institution A. Normantas paid great attention to the new function of the Seimas Ombudsmen‘s Office, i.e. national prevention of torture. "Ratification of the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture empowered the Seimas Ombudsmen to identify problems that had been unnoticed when dealing with complaints."
