SHORT HISTORY OF THE SEIMAS OMBUDSMEN'S OFFICE

11 January 1994 - the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania (hereinafter referred to as the Seimas) passed the Law on the Seimas Ombudsmen, which came into force on 24 March 1994.

8 December 1994 - the Seimas on the nomination of the Chairman of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania Česlovas Juršėnas appointed the first ombudsmen Algirdas Taminskas, Algirdas Juozapas Jankauskas, Julius Jasaitis, Stasys Stažys, Nijolė Šidagienė.

25 February 1997 - Albertas Valys appointed to the position of the Seimas Ombudsman instead of A. J. Jankauskas.

20 March 1995 - the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office joined the European Ombudsman Institute (EOI).

31 March 1995 - the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office started its work after the law Regarding Adoption of the Statute of the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office of the Republic of Lithuania came into effect. Therefore, this date is to be considered the birth date of the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office.

6 August 1996 - the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office joined the International Ombudsman Institute (TOI).

3 December 1998 - the new version of the Law on the Seimas Ombudsmen was adopted. It came into force on 16 December 1998.

11 February 1999 - the Seimas on the nomination of the Chairman of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania Vytautas Landsbergis appointed the Seimas Ombudsmen of the second term: Leonarda Kuodienė, Genovaitė Račinskienė, Kęstutis Milkeraitis, Romas Valentukevičius, Albertas Valys.

17 October 2000 - Zita Zamžickienė appointed to the position of the Seimas Ombudsman instead of. A.Valys.

28 January 2003 - the Seimas on the nomination of the Chairman of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania Artūras Paulauskas appointed the Seimas Ombudsmen of the third term: Elvyra Baltutytė, Rimantė Šalaševičiūtė, Romas Valentukevičius and Kęstutis Virbickas. Z. Zamžickienė continued her term of office.

4 November 2004 - new version of the Law on the Seimas Ombudsmen of the Republic of Lithuania adopted. It came into force on 25 November 2004.

10 December 2004 - for the first time the Seimas Ombudsmen Romas Valentukevičius, Elvyra Baltutytė, Rimantė Šalaševičiūtė and Zita Zamžickienė swore an oath at the Seimas.

20 January 2005 - Virginija Pilipavičienė appointed to the position of the Seimas Ombudsman instead of R. Šalaševičiūtė, who became the Children's Rights Ombudsman.

15 February 2005 - Albina Radzevičiūtė appointed to the position of the Seimas Ombudsman instead of E. Baltutytė, who became the representative of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania at the European Court of Human Rights.

11 April 2005 - the Seimas Ombudsman K.Virbickas resigned the office. Following resolution passed by the Seimas K.Virbickas was dismissed from the service and his powers terminated on 29 April 2005.

23 June 2005 - Augustinas Normantas appointed to the positions of the Seimas Ombudsman.

21 December 2007 - upon the resolution of the Seimas (Parliament) Romas Valentukevičius was appointed to the position of the Seimas Ombudsman for the third term. The resolution came into force on 13 February 2008.

11 January 2008 - the Seimas appointed Romas Valentukevičius for the second term as the head of the Seimas Ombudsmen's Office. The resolution came into force on 13 February 2008.

On 10 November 2009 - the Seimas (Parliament) of the Republic of Lithuania passed a resolution upon the termination of powers of the Seimas Ombudsman Mrs. Zita Zamžickienė, after five years term at the office. The resolution came into force on the day of its adoption.

19 January 2010 - the Seimas (Parliament) of the Republic of Lithuania passed a resolution upon the termination of powers of the Seimas Ombudsman Mrs. Virginija Pilipavičienė after her 5 years term at the office. Her term of office expired on 20 January 2010. Mrs. Pilipavičienė had held the office since 2005.

19 January 2010 - the Seimas (Parliament) of the Republic of Lithuania passed a resolution upon the termination of powers of the Seimas Ombudsman Mrs. Albina Radzevičiūtė. Mrs. Radzevičiūtės' 5 years term at the office ended on 15 February 2010.

21 January 2010 - the Seimas (Parliament) of the Republic of Lithuania passed a law under which the number of the Seimas Ombudsmen was reduced from 5 to 2. The Law came into force on 16 February 2010.

10 June 2010 - upon the resolution of the Seimas (Parliament) Augustinas Normantas was appointed to the position of the Seimas Ombudsman for the second term. The resolution came into force on 1 July 2008.

16 April 2013 – upon the resolution of the Seimas (Parliament) Augustinas Normantas was appointed for the investigation of activities of the officials of state institutions and agencies. The resolution came into force on the day of its adoption.

23 April 2013 - upon the resolution of the Seimas (Parliament) a new ombudsman Raimondas Šukys was appointed for the investigation of activities of officials of municipal institutions and agencies. The resolution came into force on the day of its adoption.
